Alfred Smith, Ph.D., joins College of Business as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs

Just a few short weeks on the job, Al Smith, Ph.D., is already making positive changes for the undergraduate students in the College of Business. Smith, who moved to UNLV from East Carolina University, assumed his new role July 1, 2008.

"The bulk of our students, teaching activities, and financial resources reside in the undergraduate program," said Paul Jarley, dean of the College of Business. "I see Al Smith as a leader who can provide an innovative undergraduate experience that will allow our students to differentiate themselves in the market place."

"This is a great time to be a Rebel," says Smith. "With new leadership in the College of Business, I feel like UNLV is deeply committed to providing a first-rate experience for our students. I was very attracted to this commitment and feel that the quality of faculty and students will allow us to create a dynamic program for fostering student success."

As director of the First Year Center, Division of Academic Affairs at East Carolina University, Smith assisted new students in orientation, transfer services, and provided developmental advising to undecided and reconsidering students. Smith earned his BSBA in Business Administration and his MAEd. in Counselor Education from East Carolina University, and completed his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He says he is looking forward to working with students in Las Vegas.

"I get energized in this role by developing quality programs and services that have high impact on students, he says. I love to watch the growth and development of students over their four-year education, and beyond, and derive great pleasure in being part of that experience."
