Joe Pignatiello

MBA Student

Who inspires you in regards of your career? Why?
My father. He is a man that has had it all, travelled the world, and developed business concepts for some of the most important companies in history. Yet, he has experienced severe hardship and dealt with a lot of loss. I respect him because he has overcome those obstacles; he is always willing to take a chance and never compromises his core values.

What company or business do you admire the most? Why?
The Googles, the Dells, and the Microsofts of the world. These companies are forced to reinvent themselves constantly, and they do so by recruiting innovative minds and allowing those minds to blossom. I truly admire how much responsibility these companies entrust in their employees.

What part of the business world is sexy to you?
The entrepreneurial spirit is the sexiest part of business. The ideas are so raw, innocent, and ready to mold into a business mode. When you combine that spirit with the art of deal-making, you have an unbridled opportunity fueled by the passion of the creators. I find the process of an idea turning into reality very intriguing!

What piece of advice would you share with a freshman student entering college?
I would recommend honing your networking skills. The world will always be a place where knowing someone is as important as possessing skills. Therefore, you must network early and network often. That is what will set you apart from your classmates. Also, learn the art of presenting. Having the spotlight on you will develop the ability to think on your feet and that is essential for success!

If you are having a bad day or having trouble with a project, where do you turn for inspiration?
When I am having a bad day or experiencing difficulties with a project, I am reminded of a saying I was once told, If you're on a beach and a tsunami hits, you'll drown whether you're a small child or an Olympic swimmer. Some things will go bad no matter how good you are. I always feel a sense of accomplishment knowing I put forth my best efforts. Having a strong support network of family members, friends, classmates and instructors always gives me confidence in my decisions.

If you could have any job, no limitations, what would you be doing?
International Venture Capitalist, and a very successful one at that. When you really enjoy what you are doing, it is not a job at all.

What have you done (that you can confess to) that you never thought you'd do or be able to do?
I believe that anything is possible. I was raised to believe that you never place a ceiling on your goals and aspirations. Life may be full of rejection and disappointment, but those who continue to reach for the stars are the ones who will experience great success. I hope to be amongst those legends one day.
